Weekly Update for January 12, 2026

The Data

  • 42 detentions were reported to the PIRC hotline between 1/1 and 1/11

  • Detentions in Benton, Clark, Clatsop, Linn, Marion, Multnomah, and Washington counties

  • This week, we witnessed an escalation of ICE violence in Portland with the shooting of two Venezuelan Oregonians. DHS is already smearing their reputations and devaluing their humanity in an attempt to distract from its use of deadly force in an East Portland medical center parking lot.

Quote of the Week

"I feel sorrow, fear, and depression for everything my fellow Venezuelans are going through. I know there are good people and bad people, like everywhere lese, but I see that there are no human rights here. I didn't want to go out to take my daughter to schoo; I'm terrified. It's terrifying to go out, thinking they could kill you and then say you resisted arrest. Or they could invent anything against you to benefit themselves. You have to be careful and very cautious when you're on the street. We're not safe on the street; you can't go out"

Renée Macklin Good, Keither Porter, Luis and Yornelys, and the 32 people who died in ICE custody last year. Their injuries and deaths, alongside the harm inflicted on countless others, show a clear pattern: ICE does not honor or value human lives.

This is not law enforcement. We do not want to live in a world where people shoot first and figure out the facts later. This blatant disregard for human dignity is not pro-life, nor is it good governance.

Whether this administration is murdering people on boats in the Caribbean or in the streets of Minneapolis and Los Angeles, weaponizing labels like "terrorist" or "criminal" is a cheap attempt to justify extreme violence that no one deserves. An accusation is not a conviction, and a conviction should never be a death sentence.

We will not let DHS, CBP, ICE, or this administration divide Oregonian or pit us against one another. We know that we keep each other safe, and we all deserve a community where elected officials, law enforcement, and government protect their constituents.

We will not accept the narrative that some Oregonians are disposable, cannot expect civil r criminal due process, and are subject to summary execution in the street.

DHS agents with guns in our streets do not make Oregon a safe place. We do. Through the way we grieve, care for each otehr, stand up for our rights ,and make our voices heard at the city, county, state, and federal levels.

WE PROTECT US.
