Our hearts are heavy this week with news of the massive earthquakes in Venezuela and the Supreme Court rulings ending TPS protections and allowing the administration to turn away asylum seekers at the border. See the next slide for different actions to take in response.
We stand in grief and solidarity with the people of Venezuela, many of whom became our neighbors here in Oregon over the past few years as they have sought asylum. It is particularly devastating to know that in this moment of catastrophe, tens of billions of dollars are being invested in ICE that could feed, house, welcome and provide aid to people in the US and abroad. The suffering and cruelty continues, but so does our resolve to stand together no matter what.
What can I do this week?
Venezuela Mutual Aid: Please follow our friends at the Asylum Seeker Solidarity Collective (@asylumsolidaritypdx) and check out their linktree, where they will be sharing a list of GoFundMe's being organized by Oregonians whose families have been impacted by the earthquakes, and GoFundMe's for families whose loved ones have been detained over the past year. Multiple local organizations are coordinating mutual aid donations to be sent to Venezuela this weekend.
What can I do, continued
Federal action: Call your US House and Senate representatives (202) 224-3121 and demand two things:
Venezuela earthquake: "Pressure the White House to provide immediate, massive humanitarian assistance with no strings attached; end sanctions; use stolen Venezuelan oil money for Venezuelan recovery."
TPS: "The House and Senate must urgently pass comprehensive protections for all TPS holders, including those from Haiti, Syria, and Venezuela."
Local pressure: Call or write your local elected representatives (City, County, Governor, Legislature) and tell them to make public statements supporting the safety of TPS families and opposing ICE action against them.
